Nutrition for Training

Nutrition plays an important role in your performance. The right balance of macronutrients (carbs, fat, and protein) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) can help you to minimize soreness, lower risk of injury, improve energy levels, and crush your goals!

If you’ve ever wondered if you should eat before a training run or TRIBE class, the answer is yes! Studies show that a pre-workout meal or snack containing carbohydrates can boost physical performance. This is because the body relies almost exclusively on carbohydrates for energy. Although you can get carbohydrates from refined sources (things like sugar and white rice, pasta, and bread), this quick energy won’t last very long or provide many health benefits. It’s better to focus on carbohydrate-rich foods with more nutrients and fiber such as fruit, dairy, and whole grains.

Pre-workout meal ideas:

  • Peanut butter & banana or PBJ sandwich on whole wheat bread

  • Greek yogurt with granola & fruit

  • Oatmeal made with low fat milk & fruit

  • Whole grain cereal with low fat milk & fruit

Pre-workout snack ideas:

  • Apple or banana with nut butter

  • Greek fruited yogurt

  • Granola bar

  • Whole grain rice cake with nut butter

  • Dried fruit & nuts

If you aren’t used to eating before a training run or class, make sure to time your pre-workout fuel so that you are neither hungry nor full before you start. There is no hard and fast rule for this timing because everyone’s digestive system operates a little differently, however, some general guidelines are:

  1. If you have 1-3 hours before you plan to workout, aim for a meal.

  2. If you have 20-60 minutes before your scheduled workout, eat a snack.

  3. If you only have 10-20 minutes before your workout, try consuming a small amount of easily digestible, simple carbohydrates such as fresh or dried fruit. This will give you quick energy that your body can use right away!

A Special Thank You to Our TRIBE!

TRIBE 101: What to Know Your First Time

So, it’s your first time at TRIBE Indoor Cycling, huh? Don’t worry – we’ve got you! This quick and easy guide will take you step-by-step through your first TRIBE Baltimore and Annapolis Spin Studio experience. You’ll learn what to do, what not to do, and what to expect at your first TRIBE class. Ready? Let’s RIDE!!!

First, you’ll book your bike here on our website or on our mobile app. Select your location, (TRIBE Annapolis or Baltimore), select your date and class time, then choose which spot you’d like to RIDE in the studio. At TRIBE, we move as one and ride to the beat of the music, so, as a rule of thumb, we ask those who wish to do their own thing during class or are not able to keep up with the choreography choose a bike near the back of the studio so as to not distract other riders.

When the time comes, you’ll head to our studio a few minutes early so we can show you the ropes and get you settled comfortably before class starts. Bring your own cycling shoes, or rent a pair of ours! (Yes, Peloton shoes will work with our bikes!)

We provide lockers for your use during class and water stations to fill up your water bottles. Please leave phones in the lockers during class.

Fill up your water bottle and head to your bike to clip in – make sure you have your desired hand weights racked on your bike. Adjust the height and position of your handle bars and saddle. Then, clip your shoes into the pedals. Don’t be afraid to ask for help – it takes some getting used to!

Have fun and enjoy your first RIDE! If a particular song is too easy, we suggest upping your bike resistance to make it more challenging. If you find a song too difficult or if you cannot keep up with the pace of the music, we suggest lowering your resistance. Always listen to your body! Towel off and grab water throughout class as needed.

Congratulations! You’ve made it through your first TRIBE cycle class! Wasn’t that fun?! Return your rented shoes to the proper bins, drop your used towels and book your next class before heading out. See you next time!

Is Cycling a Good Workout?

Indoor cycling can be an intense and effective workout. Cycling works the muscles in the legs, abdomen, and arms. At TRIBE Cycle, we curate our playlist music with choreography that works all of the different muscle groups and gets your heart racing. We program our bikes throughout class to increase intensity and resistance/weight. Increasing our bike resistance makes our muscles work harder as we push and pull the bike pedals beneath us! Our “climb” songs are built to increase our resistance to the maximum we can handle, giving that “feel the burn” moment!

Cycling is a cardio-intensive class that helps our riders burn hundreds of calories in each class. We also have a special part of class that incorporates light hand weights so we target our arm muscles, too!

At TRIBE, we like to incorporate a healthy mix of fast-paced, moderate-0paced and slow-paced songs throughout our 45-minute classes so we can target different goals and intensity levels. As a general rule, we suggest increasing your bike resistance whenever a particular song feels too easy, and decreasing your bike resistance whenever a particular song feels too intense or you cannot keep up with the beat of the music while riding.
